Storing Spices and Herbs

Storing Spices and Herbs

Keep closed until needed.

Store closed containers away from light.  Direct sunlight will ruin any spice or herb in less than a day.

Do not subject your seasonings to a hot environment when storing.  Place away from the stove/oven.

Purchase spices in amounts that will be used up in a year or less.  If a product has lost color, aroma and flavor, it is time to toss and purchase fresh.

It is not necessary to store your spices in the refrigerator or freezer; in fact, I advise against it.  The exception to this is if you have a powdered spice that is not used often.  Put it in a jar with a tight lid and place in the freezer or refrigerator.

Some supermarket seasonings have been adulterated with fillers and counterfeits.  Purchase premium spices and herbs from reputable dealers.
